In the TechEd Europe 2009

Hi all....

Yes another year more, and I got another opportunity to be in the TechEd Europe (in Berlin this time), this time I went to the Springboard Booth (that was more in charge of the Windows 7!) as TLC what was known in the past as proctor or Ask The Expert (ATE), all the week was very busy since a lot of people was needed to attend that comes with questions regarding Windows 7, and of course about what is Sprinboard, and I hope that all of you know, but if you don't I encourage you to visit the site www.microsoft.com/springboard, that is a one stop shop location to find all the information about Windows Client (XP, Vista, Windows 7), you want to know what is new?, well in Springboard site you will find everything that you need about it that is in all the microsoft site, like a portal for all the information: videos, walktroughs, blogs, technical documents, etc., also you need to know how to deploy?, then enter to springboard, select deploy and you will find everything related just to deployment. Well, was really fun and the week passes too quickly, just keep now a good memories about it. Now some pictures about what was the TechEd and Berlin Laughing

Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 - now RTM!!!!

Yes, finally after months and months of news about it, Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 are now RTM (Released to Manufacturing). The big question right now is when you can get it, so there is nice post from Windows Team Blog, that explains when you can get it, for example if you are an IT Pro with the Technet Subscription, then you will be able to get it since August 6th, if you are a Developer with MSDN Subscription, then you will be able to get it by August 6th as well (just in English) and all the remaining Languages by October 1st!, for Microsoft Partner Program Gold/Certified Members will be able to download by August 16th, and so on, check for more details, but in any case remember that the GA (General Availability) date will be October 22, so if you are not in those groups don't worry you will get it later!!, more information about this big milestone find in the Windows Server 2008 R2 blog and Windows 7 blog.

Net Print command, take care on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2

Well, if you were using the Net Print command (you know that this command was very used in Windows 2003 to display information about the specified print queue or to control a specific print job) that was present on Windows Vista and Windows 2008 as well. So take care now, since in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 this command was deprecated, in order to perform the same functions you will need to use WMI or Powershell as alternatives. In any case the Windows team will release a KB as soon the versions becomes available. So meanwhile take care!

Be ready, May 5 - Windows 7 RC will be available..

Following the Windows 7 Blog, this May 5 the Windows 7 RC will be publically available and since April 30 will be available for MSDN and TechNet Subscribers... Remember that this is the RC version, but we will have all the features (final) implemented, and just few issues and performance problems will be fixed (at least that is what we expect from an RC version), so save the date!, just few days from now....

More about the Virtual RoundTable Windows 7

Well, its time to summarize the Virtual Roundtable for Windows 7, it was not bad at all, I like it the first 40 min. Wink, anyway, I encourage you to check the video (ON DEMAND) at https://ms.istreamplanet.com/springboard/Default.aspm, in any case you will see this in the video:

- The classic thing "Run on Windows Vista, then run on Windows 7", "Run on Windows Vista, then run on Windows 7 FASTER", that is the main goal right now for the Windows 7, and in my tests so far is true (that is in the first minutes of the video)

- Go to hybernation is very fast! (that was improved!).

- You can see also a nice talk about the fundamentals just jump to 6 min. 29 sec. you will hear about the device compatibility, performance, battery life, security (well all the internals that are improved in Windows 7)

- Also as we all know they handle better the Driver compatibility issues - Hardware compatibility issues (thanks that they give to OEM first)

- This was very nice:  PERFTRACK. That is an instrumentation ro run the OS..  (Mark Russinovich talk about it around at min. 10)

             ex.  green section (goal ok)
             yello almost
             red (didn't met performance)
             all about the START MENU

- Over 400 foortprint reductions across all components!! that makes consistently Windows 7 is better!

- Around the minute 11, the DEMOS begin... you will see the following:

  • WIndows Vista introduces the resource monitor and now process explorer?.. but is not a reeplacement of task manager.
  • RESOURCE MONITOR --> improvements about VIsta, is that you have checkboxes so you can FILTER and zoom in just for the process you are interested
another improvement for example WHO HAS THIS FILE LOCKED?... and now in the CPU TAB this will let you find the hanldes and in the NETWORK TAB you have the TCP/IP information also.
  • BATTERY LIFE --> (powerconfig powercfg), what is new special switch /energy, since provides powerful energy report, in about 60 seconds, it drops an interesting information, for example it drops that you have too many different configurations that affects the power manager, ex. Display is not configured to sleep after x. seconds, disk idle is disabled, etc. Also review the for example CPU if the driver allow you to go to sleep mode, etc. and show specific threads thath show the specific CPU utilization(?)
  • Windows appllication compatility kit, will release in the next few months.

- About the version number that is a minor change. 6.1

- Windows display driver?, we have in Windows 7 the revision of that, and help the WDM, your 1.1 will work on 1.0.

- The cool tool... problem step recorder (psr.exe). to collect the steps and start recording (see also in the demo for minute 23)

- MANAGEABILITY AND SECURITY:  group policy.. really like applocker to secure the application (rules) (check more at minute 29:00 on how to use in a company)

- Another is the POWERSHELL v. 2.0 (check more at minute 31)

- Bitlocker ->  it let you encrypt your drive that is internal to your system (minute 33)

- DIRECT ACCESS? -> you don't notice that you are not in the office, you can access corporate resources, check more at minute 35

- VDI, VDR --> VDI is a supported network, we see the enhancments, speed of the hybrid, perform the video the encoding and decoding in the server, watching video is better moving to the user better experience, etc.

- Boot from VHD, profiles in a Server (around minute 37)

- Windows DEployment Service, the MULTICAST functionality (in the past the lowest client is who dictate the speed), meanwhile now you can switch to low medium high.
.. now we have the hardware provisioning driver

Well, as I told you at the beggining a very nice video to know quickly and from the experts the new features of Windows 7.... a must see video!!!, just jump to the areas that you like most!
